Summer Music Camp Part 2: Surfin' USA Boomwhacker Play-Along

In honor of Brian Wilson’s birthday on June 20, I created this boomwhacker play-along video that contains three chords: C, F, and G. In the middle of the song, there is an opportunity to perform a roll with the boomwhackers. This can be done by playing the boomwhacker on the ground very quickly or placing the boomwhacker inside a triangle and then shaking the boomwhacker. Following that section is a “Surfin’ Dance Party” where you and your students improvise dance moves. I hope that you and your students enjoy this play-along video!
Who is Brian Wilson?
Brian Wilson is one of the co-founders of the group, The Beach Boys. Some interesting facts about him are:
Brian is partially deaf in his right ear for reasons unknown.
Brian taught himself how to harmonize vocals, which led him to teach his family members. He also taught himself how to overdub using a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
Though surf music was not to his liking, “in the estimation of biographer Timothy White, Wilson instead aspired for a "new plateau midway between Gershwin and the best Four Freshmen material".”
His two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, went on to form two-thirds of the group, Wilson Phillips, which had several hits in the 1990s.
To learn more about his life, Kiddle has a great page about him found here.
Stay tuned this summer as I will continue to provide weekly webisodes on my YouTube Channel including tech tips, play-along videos, and more!
