#techtiptuesday #14 Three New Updates in YuStudio - June 2024

Hi, this is Amy M. Burns from amymburns.com, and this is #techtiptuesday as you can tell, it's coming to the end of the year, and my voice is shot.

0:09 So this is going to be a quick one. My #techtiptuesdays are about MusicFirst Elementary.

0:15 I'm also a preschool through fourth-grade general music teacher in New Jersey, a fifth-grade instrument teacher, and a fourth through eighth-grade band director.

0:22 I am also the Midnight Music Community Coordinator, and I am an elementary music consultant at Music First. So my #techtiptuesday focuses on MusicFirst Elementary, and today it's three updates in YuStudio.

0:35 If you don't know what YuStudio is, it's inside of MusicFirst Elementary as a creative tool. It's also currently the only web-based digital audio workstation that can score movies.

0:48 The three updates are really really fun. and cool. First is the reverb tool. Here is a little project for my third grade 3.

0:56 It's an ABA composition where they will record it into the B section. So this A section has the acoustic guitar, which I've added reverb several times because I've been experimenting with this new reverb tool in it.

1:10 What they've done is added more controls and more sliders so it works better on less powerful devices. So this is fabulous especially for us working with Chromebooks.

1:23 If I solo this track you can hear the reverb on it. Obviously, I have way too much reverb because there are five on there, so I would remove a bunch of these, but I was just experimenting with the new controls.

1:39 The second new update is that I can go into individual clips and mute them. This is wonderful if students just want to test out clips.

1:47 They do not have to mute the entire track. That's great. And the third update is this simple synthesizer. If you go into this sounds tab, you can find it there.

1:54 It's a monophonic synth, and it’s simple to use. It sounds great and works well on less powerful devices. So what do I mean by this? Go ahead and click right here into this region.

2:10 Open it up. And I always love that YuStudio shows the dots. Here's your tonic Do. It shows you notes that will work within the scale of G major because I have set the key to G major.

2:24 The students, depending on their learning style, could record and play right into the region. Or you could actually have them just input the notes.

2:33 And if they don't like it, they can just click on it and delete it. They can also extend the note if they want.

2:40 I always try to remind my students of patterns and have some of their favorite artists have these melodic patterns.

2:52 Remember that the last update allows me to loop it. My students are loving this. And now when they come to this section, you can hear the B section.

3:05 We love monophonic synthesizers just for that sound. It, for me, it totally brings me back to the earliest Atari games. So you could also extend this project by adding a video game trailer.

3:28 There's actually one included in the video tab. You could add this as a track and then have them score it.

3:36 How cool is that? Stay tuned every Tuesday for Tech Tips. Tuesday on MusicFirst Elementary. I hope you're having a great end of the year, and if you have started your break, I hope it's fabulous, or if you're on holiday, I hope that you are having a great time.

3:47 See you next week for more #techtiptuesday with MusicFirst Elementary!
